Colombian singer Nelson Pinedo rose to fame when he joined the legendary Cuban ensemble La Sonora Matancera in 1954. His nickname was The Admiral of Rhythm because he pioneered the integration of Colombian rhythms, like porro and cumbia, with Cuban music, handily blending his lighthearted vocals with an unusual mix of Caribbean rhythms, bright horns and steady hip-shaking percussion.
